Kathmandu, Nepal
On Day Six of Nepal’s tragedy, life triumphed as rescuers pulled a 15-year-old from the rubble of a multistory residential building in one of Kathmandu’s hard-hit neighborhoods. A large crowd erupted in cheers as Pemba Tamang was carried out on a stretcher. He was wearing a New York shirt and a blue neck brace, was blanketed by dust and had the look of a deer in the headlights.
His rescuer, Inspector Lakshman Basnet of the Nepalese Armed Police Force, said Tamang was responsive and showed no apparent signs of serious injury. He was given an IV drip and rushed from the Gongapur area to a temporary emergency hospital run by an Israeli aid team. The Nepalese rescuers had been working for five hours to locate Tamang after they heard his voice coming from under the debris.(136)

The number of measles cases from the outbreak that started in Disneyland last month nearly doubled this week. At least 85 cases are now confirmed in seven states, the latest in Nebraska. And the outbreak could spread even further. The outbreak began at Disneyland the week before Christmas. Of California’s 68 cases so far, 48 are linked to Disneyland.
Alaska health officials are closely monitoring 1-year-old Rivki Webb after she tested positive for measles this week. Her mother, Emily, said the family had just returned from a visit to Southern California. Rivki had also just received the measles vaccine, which can cause similar symptoms. Dr. Mon que Karaganis, the child’s pediatrician, said that there was DNA of measles in the child and they need to sort out whether that was connected to the outbreak in California.
Lab results will soon determine if Rivki has the measles, a disease once thought eradicated in the U. S.
VAPI, India
India’s new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has vowed to spend more on solar projects. But for now, coal is still the cheapest and most-viable energy source.
Coal powers the majority of the more than 800 factories in Vapi, a city that’s a four-hour drive north of Mumbai unless you’re with Rajju Shroff. Shroff, a billionaire businessman, commutes to his United Phosphorous plant by helicopter. Among other things, he makes pesticides — some for sale in the U. S. — and employs 3,000 people in India. "If we are serious, we can do most fast industrial development and we can still control the environment," Shroff says.
In December, India pledged along with 200 other countries to develop a plan to cut greenhouse gases. But with its population expected to grow by 400 million people by 2050, the reality is more plants powered by coal will be needed to meet demand.

Freddie Gray did not get timely medical care after he was arrested and was not buckled into a seat belt while being transported in a police van, Baltimore police said Friday.
Police Commissioner Anthony Batts told reporters there are no excuses for the fact that Gray was not buckled in as he was transported to a police station.
Five days after Gray’s death and amid ongoing protests, police officials acknowledged mistakes were made during and after his arrest.
Gray, who was stopped April 12 after a foot pursuit through several housing complexes, should have received medical attention at the scene of his arrest, said Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Davis. A witness said the man was yelling and indicated he was having difficulty breathing.
Investigators are trying to learn more about Gray’s condition at each of the three stops the van made on its way to a police station.

Sterling has fallen sharply against the US dollar after growth in the UK manufacturing sector slowed markedly in April.
Financial data company Markit said its? monthly Purchasing Managers’ Index(PMI)? for manufacturing fell to 51. 9 in April from 54 in March. Although a figure above 50 still indicates expansion, the fall was the biggest since February 2013. The pound was down more than 2 cents, or 1.4%, to $ 1.52. Sterling also fell against the euro to £ 1. 35.
The Markit survey follows the release of official figures on Tuesday that showed the? UK’s economic growth rate halved to 0. 3% in the first quarter of the year. The survey found that new export orders fell at the fastest rate since January 2013, job creation was "modest", and manufacturers cut prices at their fastest rate in almost six years.
