答案 Here is a picture-story with a Chinese girl studying English. While she was reading she found a compound in English "baby-sitting." She was puzzled at the meaning of the compound. "Baby-sitting , "she was repeating the phrase in an amusing manner. "Oh, nothing else have I to do just sitting on a baby if I were a babysitter." Why is the girl in the picture sitting on the baby? Needless to say, it is nothing more than a joke. However, it is often the case we find some words which may sound funny if we try to understand them literally from one language into another. For example, in English we say "take the pills, "which literally means" to take the pills in", just as "chi-yao" in. Chinese. However, we should never say "eat medicine, "or "drinking medicine" in English. It can be inferred that funny as it may be, the picture here is just used as a typical example to show how wrong we are if we always try to do translations word for word mechanically when we learn a foreign language.
