Lots of studies suggest that those of us looking for Mr. or Ms. Right may actually be looking for Mr. Facial Symmetry or Ms. Ideal Waist-to-Hip Ratio (about 0.7 for women) . But other research suggests that whether a trait is attractive depends on the type of connection you’re looking for. For example, women in one study found men with facial scars more appealing than other men for short-term relationships, but not for long-term ones. In another study, men with beards had an edge among women seeking long-term relationships.
Should two people seek lasting happiness, they may want to define the relationship, especially if they’re already friends. As any Harry or Sally can tell you, while women often mistake males’ indications of sexual interest for expressions of friendliness, men consistently mistake females’ expressions of friendliness for sexual interest. This might help explain why men are more likely to report attraction toward opposite-sex friends than are women. Further complicating matters, University of Virginia and Harvard researchers found that women were most attracted to men whose level of interest in them was ambiguous.
Those of you may have noticed that men have more predictable (and physical) definitions of what makes a woman attractive than women do for men. In one study, people tended to look at faces if seeking love, and bodies if motivated by sexual desire. In another study, people tended to check out a romantic prospect’s head and chest—while they focused on the legs and feet of someone in the friend zone.
If two people can get it together to go out, they are likely to wear red or black, especially common choices on a first date. No wonder; Red makes everyone seem more attractive, both to themselves and to others. What they order matters, too. Researchers have found that a woman is more likely to find a man attractive if she’s eating something that’s spicy rather than sweet. A drink may also help but only one. In an experiment, people who had the equivalent of a glass of wine were rated more attractive than people who drank either no alcohol or more than a glass, perhaps because they seemed more relaxed, or maybe because they were attractively flushed.
Of course, true hotness lies within, but how do you get someone to discover your inner hottie if you lack attractive hips or piercing, symmetrical eyes? A red shirt and a glass of wine could be a good start.
Men are more likely to report attraction toward opposite-sex friends than are women because________.
选项
A、women are attracted to men who are strongly interested in them
B、men are likely to consider those women who show interest in them as friendly
C、women are inclined to be friendly to men
D、women tend to regard those men who are interested in them as friendly
答案
D
解析
细节题。根据题干中的Men are more likely to report attraction toward opposite-sex friends than are women可定位至第二段第三句This might help explain why men are more likely to report attraction toward opposite-sex friends than are women. 本句中的this和explain why即为解题关键所在。但是由于this内容不明,其指代的内容需向上寻找,即第二段第二句As any Harry or Sally can tell you, while women often mistake males’ indications of sexual interest for expressions of friendliness, men consistently mistake females’ expressions of friendliness for sexual interest. 因此,正确答案应该是对这句话的同义替换。A项对应第二段最后一句,首先是脱离了定位,其次,其中的strongly与原文的ambiguous不一致,故排除选项A;B项对应于第二段第二句的后半句,但是原文表达的是men误将females expressions of friendliness当作sexual interest,而选项是将women who show interest当作friendly,正好与原文表达相反,故排除。C项的内容,原文没有明确提出,属无中生有,故排除。D项对应于第二段第二句中的women often mistake males’ indications of sexual interest for expressions of friendliness,是原文的同义替换,其中tend to regard=often mistake;those men who are interested in them=males’ indications of sexual interest as friendly=expressions of friendliness,故D项正确。故本题答案为D项。
