The Han nationality is an indigenous group that made its home in the Yellow River basin which is the cradle of the Chinese civilization. Now the Han nationality is found in all parts of the country, but mainly in the Yellow River, Yangtze River and Pearl River basins and the Songliao Plain of the Northeast. As the majority of the Chinese population is of the Han ethnic group, the other 55 ethnic groups are customarily referred to as the ethnic minorities.
