     The word "blog" is short for "web log" and is a web-based journal, a public place where you can collect your thoughts, voice an opinion or share knowledge about things you find interesting. Beyond e-mail, a blog gives you a bigger voice on the web and a wider viewing audience.
    Getting started is easy. There are many free blogging services to choose from, and most have quick enrollment and easy-to-follow directions to help you get started. If you find that blogging is fun and you become serious about writing for the long term, you might look into subscription services like TypePad@ that charge a small fee but provide more tools for customizing(定制) your blog page.
    Once you sign up, most blog sites offer several templates(模版) and color schemes for you to use to customize  your site to fit your personality or create a theme to please your audience. You should also decide early on whether you want your blog to be private or personal. You can share your blog with a select circle of friends, or you can open it to the unrestricted audience of anyone who surfs the Internet. Most blog sites offer some password protection so only those allowed by you can view what you’ve written.
    Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get many readers or comments to your biog. It takes time to find and establish an audience. If your blog theme is colorful, and if you update it frequently, more people will return. You may want to visit other like-minded blogs, leave comments on their sites, and establish a relationship so you can invite other bloggers to cross-link with your biog.
