Technology and the Traditional Culture As the technology revolution changes people’s way of life rapidly, some of human’s traditional culture faces extinction. While some people support a faster technological development in the new millennium, others cry for saving the traditional cultures from the aggression of the technology. Are technology and tradition so incompatible? I think that statement is too extreme. We can develop the science and technology as well as reserve our ancestor’s legacy. There are conflicts between technology and tradition, which is the fact we must admit. Technology makes the communication between people more convenient. And such kind of communication makes those people of undeveloped countries or areas aware of the underdeveloped condition. They enter the trend of globalization and modernization. At the same time, there traditional culture is on the edge of extinction. For example, there were hundreds of languages used by different Indian tribes one century ago. Nowadays, only several of them left because of the aggression of the so called American culture. In the process of one culture taking place of another, technology plays an important role. Under the influence of this trend, more and more old-day arts and handicrafts will only be seen in museums. Although the conflict is inevitable, technology is not a fatal challenge to traditional culture. After the creation of human being, there have been so many cultures appeared and disappeared, which is a historical phenomenon. Traditional culture dies because it can not catch upon the development of the history, which finally leads to its place in the museum. To some extent, the development of technology is an elementary part of the culture. When China’s splendid and colorful traditional culture is mentioned, our four great inventions, which are symbols of Chinese culture, must be listed. Also, technology helps people to maintain and spread their culture. At modem time, we can record pictures, sounds and characters easily and exactly. Thus we are able to see Vinci’s paintings without going to Italy, hear Beijing opera without going to the theatre and show our traditional culture to the whole world by radio, TV and internet. In my opinion, culture will survive and grow with the new power supplied by the innovation of technology. Traditional culture is not something already dead and weak. It will gain energy and renew itself through struggle. We should not be so pessimistic about the relationship of the technology and culture. As we enjoy the convenience brought by technology, we ought to take good care of our traditional culture.
