答案 Optimizing the efficiency of studying has been a concern for many people, especially teachers, students’ parents and education experts. In a traditional high school classroom, students sit at their desks and learn by listening to the teacher and taking notes. However, it has been proposed that communicating and sharing ideas with peers could be a better way of learning. And yet, I still prefer the traditional way of learning for the reasons that follow. To begin with, the priority of high school education is equipping the students with the fundamental theories of subjects, because high school is the starting point of systematic introduction to various fields. Listening to the teacher is the most efficient way to achieve this aim as teachers have expertise in respective subjects and they know how to pass their expertise on to the students. Following this point, I argue that accumulating basic knowledge is the foundation for communication and idea-sharing. The quality of communication will be limited if students have not received sufficient input of knowledge. Without a solid theoretical foundation, communication is seldom constructive. Secondly, listening to the teacher is advantageous in terms of catering for individual’s demands. It can be assumed that students are at different stages in the learning curve, thus having varying demands for studying. If they were asked to communicate with each other and sharing ideas, the gap between individuals would be an obstacle. Teachers, however, can systematically allocate the time for basic and advanced knowledge and thus balance the different learning demands. Last but not least, arguing for the importance of listening to the teacher does not exclude necessary communication and sharing. Being able to voice opinions and think critically is an indicator of the capability of learning. So, most of the classroom time should be spent on listening to the teacher while a fraction of the time can be arranged for discussions. It is also preferable for students to communicate with each other after class.
