Boy, tourism really is a big business these days. It’s amazing It involves hotels,【B1】______, restaurants, shops, and thousands of people. The tour companies keep telling us what a good thing it is... about how much we can learn about people and customs, but sometimes I wonder if this is really true.
A couple that I know【B2】______ last summer. They traveled with a tour group. It’s 【B3】______ to compare their experiences with some of the experiences of other people in the same tour group. My friends, fortunately, had some【B4】______, or friends, actually, along the【B5】______ of their tour. In some of the cities they were going to, they knew some local people. When they got to【B6】______ places, they could go out with some of the local people and they could eat some of the local food and maybe see some of the local sights.
Other members of the tour group, however, never【B7】______ the group at all. They never went out and did a thing on their own. Of course the tour company leaves it【B8】______ much up to the people to do whatever they want.
I understand that people wouldn’t go out on their own because of language problems and being a little bit afraid. But it seems to me that the more tourists can【B9】______local people, the better off everyone is. If tour companies【B10】______ that, everyone really would learn about other people and other customs.
