It was reported in the press some time ago that a few second- and third-year students in a provincial university decided to try their hands at business in order to get prepared for the future. They opened six small shops near their university. Their teachers and classmates had different opinions about this phenomenon. Some thought that the students’ business experience would help them adapt better to society after graduation, while others held a negative view, saying that running shops might occupy too much of the students’ time and energy which should otherwise be devoted to their academic study. What do you think? Write a composition of about 300 words on the following topic:
Should University Students Go in for Business?
In the first part of your writing you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Should University Students Go in for Business? There are two opposite views on university students’ trying their hands at business. One is that doing business helps to adapt better to society after graduation, while the other is that doing business might occupy too much of the students’ time and energy which, in turn, has a negative impact on their academic study. In my opinion, as long as we can strike a balance between doing business and studying successfully, its benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Firstly, going in for business can help us put what we have learned into practice. In fact, doing business is not that easy as we have expected. It requires good communication skills, negotiation knacks, presentation capabilities and so on. Although we can learn all these from textbooks, they are just theories, and the real situations are much more complicated. Only when we put knowledge into practice can we capture its essence and grasp the skills better. That is also why at present, more and more universities emphasize the importance of practice in the process of learning. If it is the case and meanwhile we are provided with the chance to do business by ourselves, why shouldn’t we have a try? Secondly, doing business may help us fit into society soon after graduation. As we know, it takes us considerable time to grow from innocent students into reliable employees. The earlier we are able to adjust ourselves to the business environment of society, the better it will be for our future career development. Negotiating a deal, making a trade, or running a shop—all these will not only provide new insights into the world outside the ivory tower but also brighten up the resumes of those marketing, finance and economy majors. At the same time. when we are seeking for a working position in society, this experience may tell us whether we are fit to do business, in which aspect we are strong and in which aspect we are weak. Last but not least, doing business can enrich our campus life. Campus life is not limited to academic study. It offers us a lot of spare time for extracurricular activities. If we can use our leisure time to do what we are interested in, such as running a small business, without neglecting our schoolwork, it will surely make our campus life more colorful and meaningful. Undoubtedly, going in for business is full of risks. It takes knowledge, wisdom, and creativity to cope with obstacles. By learning from doing business, a university student is more likely to become a practical graduate and make a greater contribution to the society in future.
