Man: Putting Blankfein up before the TV queen would certainly be a ballsy strategy for Goldman, which is anxious to improve its dreadful public image. Battling $1bn fraud charges laid by the Securities and Exchange Commission and struggling to explain its habit of paying out supersized bonuses, Goldman wants to be seen as a bit more of a caring, sharing bank. Oprah’s show worked (sort of) for the Duchess of York, who used the programme last month as the forum for an apology over her "cash for royal access" scandal. Oprah isn’t the toughest of examiners-even Sarah Palin succeeded in getting through an interview with her without saying anything too embarrassing.
Woman: Well, obviously Andrew you’re much more in touch with the latest developments in the investment financial institutions and the regulations on them and the Americans’ perception of them than I am.
Would that stretch to Lloyd Blankfein doing an Oprah interview? Given what you say, maybe. Yet, personally I’m not sure that in a country, where there is no universal welfare provision and each US citizen is largely expected to provide for him/herself, there will be a sustained disgruntlement with " overly keen" Goliaths like Goldman. It is universal. Let’s face it, participants in the derivatives, like Goldman and many others, do provide liquidity in the system. They pump a lot of liquid (cash) in the piping, which eventually works for the private pensions.
Man: I’m sure it’s nothing about his pride, he may not think he is having a lousy public image. Oprah is a billionaire with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at $2.4bn. So she might have some empathy for the circles in which Blank moves. Sadly though, Goldman’s chief spokesman, Lucas van Praag, has put the kibosh on the idea. In an email, he tells me. "We have great respect for Oprah’s programme, but no plans to have Lloyd (or anyone else) appear on it. " Van Praag accepts that as an institutional firm with no retail clients, Goldman has a challenge in getting its message across to the general public-its image is largely shaped by news reports. Lloyd Blank, chairman and CEO of Goldman Cashs, is expected to put $5bn in the compensation pool for the bank’s staff. Telling their story to a broader audience has considerable attraction but the way that is done is also important.
Woman: That’s it. They finally decided to do it. I don’t think Blankfein or Goldman Casks gives a toss what the public thinks. So long as they are protected by friend on Capital Hill and they are still able to keep manipulating markets for their own end, things will be nice and rosy. The day anyone lifts a finger to get this firm under control is the day England will win the world cup. I think it’s a good plan. It has some problems in that area and it was good when boss get it through and appears before the public. But I completely support what it was settled in the end.
Man: Andrew if I’m not much mistaken, the Goldman Casks Group, Inc. is a global investment banking and securities firm which engages in investment banking, securities, investment management. Somehow Andrew, I don’t think Lloyd Blank is having trouble sleeping at night, and he has lost a bit of face among his fellow Americans. Let’s not forget the US is a robustly free-market, capitalist society. If Goldman Cashs were a retail bank for ordinary Americans, then I would say he’d probably consider doing an interview with Oprah. GO is not your bread-and-butter financial institution.
Besides, I don’t think that populations of countries would think in a linear fashion when it comes to condemning someone who has not behaved as well by normative standards.
