Many expressions in America, as in other countries, come from the names of people. "John Hancock" is the best known example.
HancockWas a richMan. He helped the patriots (爱国者) in the American Revolution(革名)and became a head in theWar (战争) against Britain. HeWas one of the firstMen to sign the Declaration of Independence (独立宣言). Yet he is remembered best for his large signature (签名).
The story is told thatWhen Hancock sat down to sign the Declaration of Independence, he said that heWouldWrite his signature large enough for John Bull (英国人的绰号) to readWith out his glasses. John BullMeans England, as Uncle SamMeans the United States. Hancock’s signature on the DeclarationWasWritten two times larger than those of the others so that you can read his nameMore easily than even the names of Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin.
