It is reported that the First Experimental Primary School in Weiyang district in the city of Xi’an, issued green scarves to students who misbehaved or achieved poor performance, while other students wore red scarves, which is the uniform norm for primary school students throughout China. The school authority said that it was a well-meant measure to motivate students, but parents and education experts regarded it as discrimination. What is your opinion? Should we issue green scarves to motivate students? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Motivating Students by Issuing Green Scarves Is Inappropriate "We love our motherland. We love people. The bright red scarf is fluttering in the wind..." Chinese youth must be familiar with the young pioneer’s song We Are the Heirs of Communism. But for the misbehaved and under-achieving students in the primary school mentioned in the topic, the lyric will have to be rewritten as "the bright green scarf is fluttering in the wind". The irony of this event, I believe, shows that it is inappropriate to motivate students by issuing green scarves. First of all, green scarves are a distorted image of the scarves worn by young students. A red scarf is traditionally part of the uniform of primary school students in China. As a corner cut off from our national flag, it conveys a special connotation. Not only does it symbolize Young Pioneers in China, but also acts as a reminder of the hard times when our ancestors used to fight and struggle, urging young people of today to cherish a life of peace and abundance. Though claimed by the school authority as a well-intentioned motivator, green scarves inappropriately change the meaning of wearing a scarf. Secondly, wearing a green scarf inevitably casts a shadow on the children’s growth. In the delicate mind of young students, it’s more than a different color, but an insult to their self-esteem. If not dealt with properly, a simple scarf could turn into a scar, inflicting psychological trauma upon the wearers. Besides, issuing green scarves to misbehaved students is an act that deprives students of their rights to wear the same red scarves as their peers. This will exert such a lasting impact as to develop a sense of inferiority. Finally and most significantly, a green scarf is discrimination in disguise. Worse than arranging class seating based on grades and dividing students into classes of different levels, the green scarf is a visual label of discrimination which will leave a deeper mark upon the mind of students and even the whole society. Associating children who are mischievous or academically inadequate with a green scarf is actually an act encouraging schools to take up a problematic value system. It goes against our belief of education as a nondiscriminatory and e-qual endeavor, and exposes a faulty education system. China is a nation where the art of subtlety is widely appreciated and practiced, as we tend to be face-saving. When it comes to the field of education, especially educating young students, a subtle manner of love, caring and encouragement shall prevail over stereotyped labels.
