In the past few years, some senior middle schools intended to introduce a new course, general technology which covers basic living skills, as a new generation graduation exam subject. Education experts say the teaching of this subject is much stressed in developed countries. The United States adopted it nearly 70 years ago; in Germany, more time is spent on living skills training than on subjects such as physics and literature; in Japan and Britain, living skills are taught all the way from kindergarten to high school. Supporters also believe these are all basic living skills, so it’s necessary to have courses like these covering them during basic education. They say it is a most useful form of education, which will benefit students for the rest of their life. But whether the course, which teaches such things as how to repair toilet fittings and change light bulbs, should be listed among other exam subjects is still being debated. Some people insist that the new course is unnecessary despite its well-meaning intention. They believe families should help students develop living skills, rather than schools. Besides, if these skills are required to be tested, they will become new burdens but no different from other exams.

答案 Learning Basic Living Skills at Home Is Better Recently, education about basic living skills has become a hot issue. Some people believe that such course should be introduced to school because it will benefit students for the rest of their life. While others insist that such course had better to be taught by parents instead of teachers. For my part, though helping students to develop basic living skills is a good intention, making it a compulsory course in school is still unnecessary and it is better for the students to learn those skills at home. On the one hand, families can provide a much more suitable platform for students to develop basic skills than high schools do. Firstly, there is an old saying that family is the first school for children, and parents are the first teachers of their children, which means that children begin learning some basic skills from their parents at an early age. It is well acknowledged that children tend to imitate their parents. In a situation where parents use basic living skills to deal with various problems, children will definitely get influenced. Day after day, they could develop these basic living skills unconsciously. Secondly, the living skills learned at home can be practiced at once. Take repairing toilet fittings for an example. When at home, children can use the techniques they just learned to fix the toilet, which will hardly happen in a class in school. Moreover, the sense of achievement children got after they solve the problem would encourage them to do better in learning new life skills and practice those skills. On the other hand, if the course covering basic living skills is introduced to school as an exam subject, its disadvantages may overweight its advantages. First and foremost, students have to bear more burden. Many students nowadays not only receive education at school, but also attend after-school classes, so they are stressed out. If a new course is added, there is no doubt that they have to spend more time and efforts on it. A tighter schedule is expected. Moreover, school education can make the course deviate from its original intention. One basic living skills are included in a compulsory course, students will treat it as any other compulsory course, learning the skills for high grades in the subject not for their practical value. As a result, it might be possible that students choose a course which is easier for them to get an A, rather than a course that is more practical for them. In conclusion, it is necessary for students to learn some living skills, which help students become independent in life. However, we should also consider the heavy burden of current exam-oriented educational system, and avoid adding more burden to students. Consequently, it is better for students to acquire life skills at home rather than in school.
