Passage A
Majority or 60.6 percent of Chinese students study abroad to obtain a diploma from foreign schools and improve their social status, according to a recent online survey conducted by China Youth Daily.
The survey indicated some factors that drive students to study abroad. At least 46.5 percent said that Chinese students view overseas education as a way to gain advantages in employment, while only 42.8 percent said they study abroad to get a better education.
Other factors were also cited in the survey, in which 38.5 percent said that overseas education serves as an eye-opener, 29 percent did it to seek independence from parents, and 28.4 percent said studying abroad helps them avoid the pressures of China’s examination. Another 22.8 percent said they simply study abroad without any clear goals.
Most of the respondents believe that "diploma mills" exists globally, whose major characteristics include low entry thresholds (64 percent), selling diplomas for money (60.9 percent)and diplomas not publicly recognized (48.9 percent).
The survey further indicated that 57.9 percent of respondents said those who fall victim to "diploma mills" usually just want to study abroad to improve their social status and cared very little about what they learn: 53.2 percent said both students and parents find it hard to get reliable knowledge about the qualifications offered at foreign universities: 42.7 percent said some people simply prefer foreign education and related diplomas: 38.6 percent said they cannot tell whether a university is a "diploma mill" or not: and 23.4 percent said Chinese authorities have failed to provide timely and accurate information to warn them of foreign "diploma mills."
Passage B
Graduating from a university abroad does not necessarily guarantee a satisfactory job in China, according to a study-abroad agency consultant.
Chinese students pursue education in other countries either to cover up deficiencies in their studies or to receive a better quality of education, consultant Liu explained. Although obtaining an overseas diploma is an asset, Chinese graduates with low academic performance may not be able to take advantage of their overseas diplomas when looking for a job in China.
A human resources department supervisor in a private company in Tianjin explained that local and overseas graduates are treated equally "as long as their abilities are satisfactory." Further, Chinese consulting company employee Xiao Yu said that what Chinese employers care more about is "whether you are competent in your job, rather than your overseas experience."
From 1978 until now, approximately 2.64 million Chinese students chose to study abroad, and 90 percent of them paid for their own education costs. From 2009 to this year, there were about 800,000 Chinese students who returned from overseas, which is three times higher than the number of returning students three decades ago.

Studying Abroad Never Comes Without Risks An online survey has revealed that the most possible underlying reasons for Chinese students to study are that overseas experiences will bring them such benefits as the rise of social status, the priority of employment, better education and broadened horizons. According to an expert, nonetheless, studying abroad has not brought the desired benefits and what makes it worse is the problem that they might not get a satisfactory job after returning to China due to lack of high academic performance or recognized diploma It is thus essential for students to discreetly consider the benefits and drawbacks of overseas study in light of their personal circumstances. In my opinion, although confronted with difficulties of overseas study, students with self-discipline and a detailed plan can actually benefit a lot. For those who do not intend to gain permanent residence, studying a abroad is a perfect chance to seek independence when they live alone and have direct access to foreign customs by experiencing a fresh culture, which makes it easier to hunt for a more well-paid job in China. In spite of a great many merits, however, studying in a completely strange place is an arduous process for students who do not give a thorough consideration ahead. They generally dilapidate their study. The fact that students, working as purchasing agents, sit in front of the computer and focus on client inquiries instead of school assignments is prevalent. Suffering from loneliness and homesickness, having trouble adapting to the local culture, encountering language barriers, these students constantly feel frustrated and depressed in their studies and some students who are unable to cope with stress even drop out of school. To sum up, studying abroad is truly conducive to future development of students. Nevertheless there is no assurance that it will be a success with the money and time invested. It is students with persistence, determination and adequate preparation, not those without clear goals, should be encouraged to study abroad for expanded cultural vision, advanced academic knowledge, and better career development.
