Compulsory education begins at the age of six. But many parents send their children to nursery schools for two or three years before they start primary school. At the age of twelve, secondary education starts. Pupils go either to general secondary schools or to vocational schools. After three years’ secondary education, pupils receive the Secondary School Certificate. Higher secondary education also lasts for three years.
