问题 Visit a hardware store in search of a can of white paint, and you’ll face a blizzard of choices. Benjamin Moore & Co. offers more than 300 shades, all bestsellers for more than a decade. PPG Industries Inc. , a favorite of commercial painters and decorators, sells 65 base whites alone, but it also has options such as Fuzzy Unicorn and Glacial Ice, if you need a tint with more niche appeal.
We are, quite simply, obsessed with white paint. It wasn’t always so. Until the 19th century, a richly colored wall was the epitome of style. "It was a status symbol," says Pedro da Costa Felgueiras of London’s Lacquer Studios, which specializes in recreating lost paints from the past. " It wasn’t cheap at all to create a bright, vibrant color in the 18th century. " Many think white began its march to dominance thanks to London-based interior designer Syrie Maugham who famously created a trendsetting all-white room in her house in the 1920s; walls, fabrics, even the flowers.
It was the 1980s, though, that turned white into the dominant interior shade. There was an explosion of almost-whites in the decade. As a result, picking the right white has become an agonizing challenge for most amateurs when repainting a home. Clare Inc. , founded in 2018 by former interior designer Nicole Gibbons, is a direct-to-consumer business that offers just three white options; warmer Whipped, cooler Snow Day, and fresh Kicks, the just-right middle ground. "Traditional companies reached a point where they kind of stopped innovating, and the only thing they could do to freshen up their story was launch new colors," she explains.
One scientist, though, is even more ruthless than Gibbons in his mission to cull the oversupply. In April, Purdue University mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan announced that his team of six color creators had developed the whitest white paint in the world. Their secret?
Barium sulfate, the same chemical used in photo paper and cosmetics. Ruan and his team’s highly concentrated emulsion features particles of different sizes, so various wavelengths of sunlight are all reflected back simultaneously.
Most commercial white paint becomes warmer rather than cooler when baking in the sun, but the whitest white reflects 98. 1% of the sun’s energy and measures 8°F~ 18°F cooler at the same time. Deployed properly, it could act as a carbon-neutral way to lower temperatures. "Theoretical modeling shows that in Reno and Phoenix the paint may save up to 70% of air-conditioning costs in the summer," Ruan says. Ruan’s team is working with partners to develop a consumer version by 2023.
It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that white _________.

选项 A、was the mainstream color before 19th century
B、was deemed as the symbol of status
C、wasn’t created at a low cost
D、owed its prevalence to Syrie Maugham

It was a status symbol“这是一种身份的象征”,其中It指代的是前面的a richly colored wall“色彩丰富的墙壁”,该选项偷换概念,故排除;选项C可定位至第五句,同理,It指代的不是白色,故排除;选项D可定位至最后一句,其中owed to对应thanks to,prevalence对应dominance,是同义表达,故选项D正确。
