Despite his flourishing career in the English League, Stallions player Raul Vargas wants to become more than a sports star. At the Soccer Federation Awards on Saturday, the newly hailed Goalie of the Year revealed his plan to quit sports and pursue another profession. "Lately, I have been thinking of giving up soccer," Vargas said during his acceptance speech. "Receiving this award is a sign that it’s time for me to retire." Such words were never expected to come from the Brazilian, who is the most treasured goalkeeper in the league. During Stopwatch Magazine’s exclusive interview with the player, however, Vargas explained that he made the decision because he has responsibilities that have forced him to retire from soccer.
"I have reached the point where I have fully achieved my dreams as an athlete," Vargas said. "More importantly, I need to become more involved with my family’s corporation, an obligation I have put aside since I began my career."
Being the sole heir of the Biobras Corporation, Vargas was originally groomed to lead the company. His parents sent him to Brasilia University to study industrial engineering, with the expectation that he would take up a master’s degree in the United States later on. While preparing to lead the top biofuel company in Brazil, however, Vargas was making a name for himself as one of the best goalkeepers in college.
Because of his impressive talent, Vargas was offered a spot on the national team immediately after graduation. Thus, he set aside plans of obtaining a graduate degree and entering Biobras Corporation, choosing rather to accept the team’s offer upon receiving the blessing of his parents.
Soccer fanatics witnessed how the career of the 29-year-old boomed. Apart from playing for the national team, Vargas joined English clubs East Hampton, Armorshire, and Hemel Finstead before he was signed by the Stallions.
"I have enjoyed putting on exciting matches with my teams. It’s rewarding to bring joy to football fans," Vargas said.
However, Vargas has made the choice to take off his uniform and venture into the corporate world. "Nothing is permanent in the sports industry. I have to establish a more stable career, and I hope this decision will allow me to do it. Nevertheless, soccer will always be my first love," Vargas said.
