Since word processing software is becoming increasingly powerful to correct almost all spelling mistakes, the exact spellings of many words are usually neglected. Besides, some people hold the notion that as long as one is able to communicate in English, it is not at all important whether he can spell the words he uses or not. Last but not least, our exams do not test spelling so much as they used to. In order to change the situation, due attention should be given to spelling. On the one hand, students should depend less on automatic spelling-check software and pay more attention to handwriting. On the one hand, teachers should highlight the importance of correct spelling and focus more on the skill instruction in spelling. Only by mutual efforts can spelling mistakes be eliminated.
