Computers may one day turn night into day-with good old, natural sunlight.
Giant computer-controlled mirrors, thousands of feet across, 【56】 one day orbit the earth, 【57】 sunlight onto a darkened United States.
Two scientists 【58】 NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) say that 16 of these mirrors, 【59】 about a half mile wide, could 【60】 their reflected light at one area on earth 【61】 was about 200 miles 【62】 300 miles. That much light would equal 【63】 56 moons.
The mirror would be 【64】 high that they could 【65】 the sun’s light 【66】 the sun was shining on the 【67】 side of the Earth. The mirrors would 【68】 thousands of miles high 【69】 the same speed as the Earth spins. That way, the mirrors 【70】 always be over the same spot.
The aluminum-coated, plastic mirrors could be 【71】 up and packed into a 【72】 shuffle, according to the scientists, John Allen and John Canady. 【73】 released a few hundred miles in 【74】 , the mirrors, powered 【75】 a solar-powered engine, could make the rest of the trip into space on their own.
Allen and Canady say that the computer-controlled mirrors could also be made to tilt slowly, so the reflected sunlight would sweep slowly along the surface of the Erath. For example, as night fell, the mirrors could be tilted to light up Boston. Later on as darkness crept slowly westward, Chicago, for example, then San Francisco could be lit up. The reflected sunlight would allow these cities to conserve electricity. And in emergencies, such as power-failures or disasters, the mirrors could light up the affected areas.
