Richard W. Simmons, whose 40-year acting career in Hollywood included the title role in the 1950’s television series "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon," died in New York on Saturday. He was 89.
    Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Mr. Simmons, who was known as Dick, moved to Los Angeles in the late 1930’s. He later became a contract player for MGM studios and appeared in a number of films beginning in 1937 with "A Million to One," which starred Joan Fontaine. Other credits included "Angels in the Outfield" (1951), "The Three Musketeers" (1948) and "Lady in the Lake" (1946). His last role was in the 1977 television movie "Don’t Push, I’ll Charge When I’m Ready."
    He is best known for his role as Sergeant Preston, a mounted Canadian officer who solved crimes with his horse, Rex, and his dog, Yukon King, an Alaskan malamute. The show had its origins in radio and was created by the team behind "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet."
    Mr. Simmons was good friend with Clark Gable and Clayton Moore, who played the masked hero in the "The Lone Ranger" television series, his daughter, Susan Bryar, said.
    In addition to his daughter he is survived by his wife, Billie, and a son, Michael.
