答案 Choosing one’s career is one of the most important things in one’s lifetime. It is argued that young people should try several different jobs before they take a long-term career. I do not agree with this opinion as I think the advantages of trying different jobs are overshadowed by the disadvantages. Firstly, it takes time to accumulate experience and develop expertise in a field while trying different jobs goes contrary to this process. One’s energy and resources are not unlimited. By focusing on a certain field instead of spreading attention on several different fields, one can achieve in-depth understanding of a job. This is particularly true in jobs that require high-level of intelligence and experience. For example, it takes years to train a medical student into a doctor. If a medical student decides to try several other jobs before taking a long-term career, he or she would probably lose the opportunity of becoming a doctor for good. Long-term careers such as doctors require continuous dedication and effort. Any interruptions are likely to impair their skills. Secondly, the society works most efficiently if employees are highly specialized. In other words, more value will be created if people are doing what they are good at. People have chosen the major they are interested in when they are enrolled in colleges and universities. They have four years to learn about their potential career choices and try other possibilities by taking part-time jobs or internships. If they try other jobs before taking a long-term career after graduation, the society would lack skilled employees in corresponding positions. Understandably, the proposition specified in the question takes into consideration the individual’s potential in various aspects. I agree that a person can be successful in more than one field and he or she should have the freedom to make career choices. However, many jobs require long-term input and accumulation of knowledge and experience. Trying other jobs that are not one’s expertise would possibly result in a waste of resources. Besides doctors, other typical examples that support my view are scientists and researchers. To be a scientist or a researcher, it takes at least an extra five years’ education for an undergraduate student to obtain a Ph.D. degree. Choosing a job that is directly related to one’s field of expertise after graduation is apparently the most suitable choice for an individual and the society.
