Should We Charge Higher Parking Fees to Control Traffic Jam? Faced with the increasingly worse traffic jam and seemingly endless hours spent on commuting, we can not wait any longer to get started solving the traffic problems in big cities like Beijing. And the recent measure taken is to charge higher parking fees, especially in downtown areas. When asked about the effectiveness of such a measure, the general public’s positions are clearly split. Some firmly believe that it would be the way out since people’s incentive to use private cars would be seriously compromised when they have to pay such high parking fees. And no one would be willing to pay several times higher fees for parking than what would cost by taking a taxi, not to mention the low price of taking a bus. While others still hold the opposite view about such a policy, suggesting the possibility of car owners parking their cars somewhere else other than the parking spots, which will lead to the waste of limited parking space in cities and other more potential problems. As far as I am concerned, whether this policy can effectively control the traffic jam remains to be observed. But this would surely be one meaningful step with more steps to follow and the ultimate solution lies in the gradual changes brought about by the combined efforts of everyone.
