It is generally acknowledged that China is surely in a transformation process, and this is also the case for the college education in China. Now a lot of experts are suggesting that Chinese history should be made a compulsory course in the curriculum in China’s universities. And I’m with them. The reasons can be divided into three categories. We know from history that we used to have our own system for education, such as philosophies, practices and wisdom, but it is also true that contemporary China’s education has a lot of ideas and practices originating in western countries. A lot of disciplines such as economics, psychology and natural science have basically the same framework with those in western countries. Since higher education is supposed to produce leaders of different areas in our society, it would be problematic to cultivate future leaders knowing well about western culture, but understanding little about their native culture. As a result, we should add Chinese history to the compulsory curriculum so that the students can learn from the past and know that they should be responsible for their compatriots who share the same cultural heritage with them. The second reason lies in the very nature and quality of Chinese culture. Since China has been among the leading countries for a very long time throughout history, learning Chinese history also carries important practical values. Even some of the problems we face today can be solved by our ancestors with their wisdom. For example, the underwater system of Song Dynasty is even superior to the infrastructure nowadays in many cities. The courage to include foreigners in the government agencies in Tang Dynasty still carries profound political wisdom and practical significance for today’s administration. The crafts of many daily items in ancient times even surpass the modern technology. What’s more, the high level of philosophical thinking towards life attitudes, interpersonal relations and human’s role in nature are all rich resources for us to dig, explore and use as an inspiration. Moreover, China as a rising power also needs to have citizens with a deep understanding of their cultural roots. It is difficult to imagine a great power in the international community without a strong and unique cultural influence. Experience from history makes it quite clear that a strong economy needs a strong culture and we have definitely already got the basis for a strong culture. But what we need first is a young generation not only familiar with but also proud of its history. Only when they are confident about their own history and culture, can they really start to think about the possibility of exerting our cultural influence in a wider range. To sum up, the lack of knowledge about Chinese history in our young generation, the practical values to be found in history and the need for cultural influence all call for Chinese history to be included as a compulsory course in our college education.
