What is the weather like in Canyonlands?

M: Today I will be taking you to one of Utah’s out-of-this-world destinations—Canyonlands. As with all of Utah’s national parks, the history of Canyonlands is written primarily in the language of stones—limestone, sandstone and shale. Yes, Canyonlands is wild and rugged- an intriguing place to explore at anytime of the year. Spring and fall are usually long and pleasant, except for possible high winds in April or May. Winter is short, with little snow, although temperatures do drop below freezing at night. Summers bring baking heat. Most of the yearly rain falls during infrequent thunderstorms in late summer or early fall.
    There are several ways to explore the diverse terrain of Canyonlands. You can see a lot of the park from your car, but to get a closer look, leave your car behind. Commercial operators are licensed to conduct four-wheel-drive, mountain climbing, and river rafting tours. Or you can hike, camp, backpack, cycle all on your own.
    If you do decide to plan your own camping tour, here are some reminders.
    Two front country campgrounds, Squaw Flat and Willow Flat, and numerous primitive backcountry camping sites are open year-round. But reservations are not available for individual front country campsites. If it’s the backcountry that you would like to explore, a backcountry permit is required. You may call or write to the Backcountry Reservations Office, or if you are lucky enough, you may get one from the Visitor Centers if space is available. While you are packing for your trip, don’t forget map and stove. Pets are allowed only on front country roads and in front country campgrounds, and must be leashed at all times.
