Mr. Schaeuble says he and other party members bear some responsibilities for the party funding scandal because ______.
The leader of the Germany’s opposition Christian Democrats Wolfgang Schaeuble says he and other party members hear some responsibilities for the party funding scandal engulfing the former Chancellor, Helmut Kohl. Mr. Schaeuble told German Television that donations and accounts had not been checked as thoroughly as they would be now. He admitted that he himself had accepted some 50,000 dollars in cash from an arms dealer in 1994 and passed it onto Party Treasurer s. Kalan Mike reports:
"Wolfgang Schaeuble has said he sees no reason to resign, blaming the then Party Treasurer for not clearing the cash contribution. But with Helmut Kohl already under criminal investigation for his activities, it now seems likely that the state prosecutors will also turn the spotlight on Wolfgang Schaeuble. Mr. Kohl’s legacy as one of Europe’s longest serving leaders and the man who united Germany has already ken irrevocably tarnished by this scandal. Now though, his long years of the absolute authority in his party is threatening its future by tainting the whole generation of those who served under him."
