[R]ESPONSE Often college students are required to work in groups on projects, and generally professors assign each member of the group the same grade. Some students complain that this is unfair, but I think it is much better than giving separate grades. There are some reasons why I feel this way. First, every group member should receive the same grade because the main point is to assess their teamwork skills. Most university assignments assess a student’s independent study skills, but group work tests their ability to work collaboratively. That means dividing up the tasks effectively, reviewing and providing feedback on each other’s work, and presenting all the findings in a logical and coherent way. Usually, each member of the team contributes something different, but their contributions are all equally valid. It would be arbitrary and unfair to give some group members higher scores than others, as it is their combined work that is being assessed. Moreover, it is important to give each group member the same score to ensure they all take an interest in every aspect of the project. That way, students are encouraged to take responsibility for the whole project and help each other as much as possible. For example, if your team were doing a project on insects, your main job might be to research ant behavior. In a context where students receive individual grades, you would have no reason to help your team mates with their research on other types of insects. But if the professor gave each group a collective grade, you would be motivated to assist other students with their work and learn about other insects, too. In summary, it is better to give everyone in the group the same grade for the work they produce collectively. This helps to emphasize the importance of teamwork, as well as encouraging students to pay greater attention to the various tasks involved in the overall project.
