Dissatisfaction Leads to Progress A famous Chinese proverb says, "A contented mind is a perpetual feast." Satisfaction has always been emphasized as a crucial factor of happiness in our traditional culture. However, we seldom find ourselves totally satisfied once we have achieved our previous goal, and a feeling of dissatisfaction may drive us to make further improvement constantly. Many argue that it is dissatisfaction that leads to progress. I believe that the desire for satisfaction can be an incentive that prompts us to go ahead. First, dissatisfaction is the driving force for individuals to undertake self-perfection. A student who has failed in an exam is prone to work harder on the course. An employee who is fired due to ill performance will try his or her best to avoid such faults in the future. A man who is warned by his doctor about his state of health will pay more attention to his lifestyle and exercise more. Dissatisfaction is not only accompanied by pain or sorrow, but also filled with incentive to make corrections. Only in this way can a person realize his or her own disadvantages, make best use of the advantages, and bypass the disadvantages. Anyway, a man who is satisfied with everything has no reason to struggle for something else, and is unwilling to make any change. Second, since we all want to achieve our goals of satisfaction, our dissatisfaction about anything will push us to work towards those goals. Looking through our scientific and social history, dissatisfaction has had great influence upon each milestone. For instance, our dim sight in darkness has forced people to find different ways to achieve artificial illumination. The suffering of illness has led to leaps and bounds in modern medicine. The unfairness and injustice in society have caused dramatic changes for better social institutions. It is dissatisfaction that has brought us to civilization, and we still make more and more advancements due to our dissatisfaction with our status quo. All in all, dissatisfaction impels people forward. The world is built up by those who’d like to live a better life and not be inferior to their competitors. Sometimes, dissatisfaction is not because what you have acquired is less, but because what you’re pursuing is more. It is the pursuit for happiness and satisfaction that generates endless dissatisfactions, which will lead us to get closer and closer to our goals.
