Excerpt 1
Why Does College Reputation Matter So Much to Students and Employers?
If you want to work for one of Wall Street’s leading investment banks, law offices or consulting firms you’d better graduate from a prestigious college like Harvard, Princeton or Yale. These elite firms overwhelmingly hire graduates from these highly ranked colleges.
Why does college reputation matter so much to students and employers? Economists argue that reputation matters because it conveys information about the expected quality of a firm’s products.
When product quality is hard to ascertain, consumers seek information to make purchasing decisions. This is particularly true for "experience" products such as a bottle of wine, healthcare or a college education. Physical examination of these kinds of products does not reveal their quality—beautiful labels and modern athletic facilities do not predict whether a wine will taste good or whether a college will provide a good education.
Experience goods are typically purchased based on reputation or recommendation. This is why consumers are willing to pay more for wines that are highly rated by the likes of Robert Parker, why referrals are crucial when choosing doctors and why prospective students and parents pay so much attention to US News and World Report college rankings. Unlike clothing or electronics, which typically come with money-back guarantees, wine, healthcare and college education are products you need to experience to decide whether they ultimately represent a good value proposition.
So reputation matters a lot for students choosing which college to attend. Exactly why reputation matters so much to employers is much less clear, however.
In a new paper we aim to explain why. Our premise is that college reputation matters insofar as it conveys information about the abilities that employers can reasonably expect from graduates of a given college. Colleges with a strong reputation may just be cherry-picking students that will succeed no matter which college they attend. Colleges may actually do something to students that employers value. Or colleges may do a mix of both.

Majors Should Be Given Priority
With rising tuition costs and a rapidly changing job landscape, a student’s college major is more important than ever. It can either set you up for lifetime career success and high earnings or sink you into debt with few avenues to get ahead of it.
In fact, in a new report by Gen-Y researcher Millennial Branding, a full 69% of managers agreed that relevant coursework is important when considering job candidates.
So which college majors are most likely to land you a well-paying job right out of school? Analysts at PayScale compared its massive compensation database with 120 college majors and job growth projections through 2020 from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to determine the 15 most valuable majors in the current marketplace. Ranked by median starting pay, median mid-career pay (at least 10 years in), growth in salary and wealth of job opportunities, engineering and math reigned supreme.
At No. 1, biomedical engineering is the major that is most worth your tuition, time and effort. Biomedical engineers earn a median starting salary of $53,800, which grows an average of 82% to $97,800 by mid-career. Moreover, the BLS projects a whopping 61. 7% growth of job opportunities in the field—the most of any other major on the list.

Which Weighs More : College Reputation or College Major? In addition to the importance of the College Entrance Examination itself, which college and major to apply to is also crucially important for students. Some favor college reputation while others believe college major matters more. The former believes that just as consumers tend to focus on brand-name products when they make purchasing decisions, employers value college reputation very much because the fame of universities means a lot in their eyes. The latter holds that a good major will prepare students for a successful career in the future, and relevant major courses are highly valued by employers when they consider job candidates. In my view, college major far outweighs college reputation. First and foremost, for students, choosing a major they like will contribute to their academic success. As the famous saying goes, interest is the best teacher. If they major in what they’re interested in and aim to pursue, there is no doubt that they will have a good command of the specialized knowledge and finish their studies smoothly. On the contrary, if the major they choose doesn’t appeal to them, they will probably waste four years of college for nothing. In the next place, being closely related to their future jobs, a good major will give them an edge in career competition. So as long as our students equip themselves with excellent professional knowledge and skills, a promising college major will be more rewarding. What’s more, there is an old Chinese saying, "It doesn’t matter whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice. " From the standpoint of businesses or employers, professional ability speaks louder than anything. After all, graduates from elite colleges are nothing new today. From what has been mentioned above, I insist that, in the long run, students holding a good major are more likely to stand out in the job market. So the top priority for students before applying to college is to identify their own strengths, ponder over what they really like, as well as the employment prospects of the major.
