答案 Urbanization in China Nowadays, urbanization has become a popular word. It frequently appears in the newspapers, magazines, TV programs and all kinds of conferences. For China, urbanization is a hot topic that attracts a wide-range attention. There are different opinions toward this phenomenon. The emphasis on different aspects makes it present a complicated appearance. But what on earth is urbanization, what effects it will bring to China and of these influences, what is good and what is bad? These questions deserve a thorough consideration. Urbanization refers to a process in which an increasing proportion of an entire population lives in cities and the suburbs of cities. Historically, it has been closely connected with industrialization. Since 1840, the developed countries have undergone this process, and now urbanization as a process is coming to an end. But for the developing countries, the so-called the Third World Society, this process is just burgeoning. In the past fifty years since 1950 the percentage of urbanization has increased to over 40% and by the year 2030, almost 60% of the Third World populations will live in cities. The same is for China. Since 1978, we have accelerated the pace of industrialization and urbanization. More and more peasants flock into cities to earn their livings. With this trend, some professionals declare that urbanization is taking place in China and will go on in the following 20 years. As for urbanization, there are also paradoxical opinions. Some view it from the positive perspective, believing that it will become the major incentive for our economic increase, and we can make more effective use of lands because of the big density of population. They say that urbanization is an inevitable process for China to become an industrialized country. Converse to this optimistic opinion, some people object to this trend, fearing that it will bring a series of problems and negative influence, such as more slums around the cities and more difficulties in finding a job. As for me, I think we should view this question from an all-sided perspective. On one hand, we should acknowledge that it will bring some problems. But on the other hand, we should have a futurist’s mind. Urbanization is an essential problem for China. Since it is unavoidable we should deal with it as well as possible. I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. We can find solutions to the problems it will bring about. As for the slums, there have already been many shuns in the rural areas and we can’t stop the pace just because of that. And for the job opportunities, we should promote our productivity to provide more jobs, not keep peasants from working in cities. In a word, urbanization will be a beneficial social trend only if enough good jobs can be found for the rapidly growing population. As long as we solve these problems, urbanization of China will prove to be a successful process that benefits Chinese people.
