The United States and China are competing to win the most medals at the 2008 Beijing 0-lympic Games.
Regardless of which country wins, there is no denying that these two nations have athletes that excel on the Olympic stage.
But the manners in which these athletes are trained are totally different.
In America diere is no national governing body that examines young athletes and chooses what sports they should play. This decision is made by the family. If a child shows interest in swimming or gymnastics, the parents might encourage him or her.
Paying for lessons and coaching can be expensive, the cost reaching, in some instances, as much as $ 100, 000 a year. Only when you make the national team do you receive any financial assistance.
But parents see it as a good investment. They believe the hard work and focus required in practising can be used in other areas of life. For example, gymnast Shawn Johnson, 16, has already published three short stories.
More usually, athletes use their excellence in sports to get college scholarships.
Sport scholarships are awarded to athletes of outstanding performance in order to enable them to finance their studies at colleges.
The athlete participates fully in practice sessions with the college team and represents the university in various competitions.
US adiletes get to the Games in different ways. Renee Hykel, a member of US Rowing, began rowing while attending St. Josephs University. Since graduating she has earned a master’s degree and is now attending law school. Todd Wells of US Cycling worked in the computer industry before his love of biking took over. And Jason Parker, US shooting, was in the US Army before joining the team.
Their overall goal seems to be success in a sport but also in life. Many of them know dieir careers will be short lived and it is important to be prepared for the rest of their lives.
For example, US swimmer Michael Phelps has said he would like to have a career in either sports marketing or in some technical field.
While the chance to represent their country in the Olympics is priceless, it becomes even more valuable when they can continue contributing long after the games have ended.
