Katherine Gram graduated from the University of Chicago in 1938 and got a job as a news reporter in San Francisco. Katherine’s father used to be a successful investment banker. (4) In 1933, he bought a failing newspaper, The Washington Post. Then Katherine returned to Washington and got a job, editing letters in her father’s newspaper. She married Phillip Gram, who took over his father-in-law’s position shortly after and became a publisher of The Washington Post. But for many years, her husband suffered from mental illness and he killed himself in 1963. After her husband’s death, Katherine operated the newspaper. More than three thousand people attended her funeral, including many government and business leaders. Her friends said she would be remembered as a woman who had an important influence on events in the United States and the world. Katherine once wrote, “The world without newspapers would not be the same kind of world.” (6)After her death, the employees of The Washington Post wrote, “The world without Katherine would not be the same at all.”

选项
A、She was the first woman to lead a big U.S. publishing company.
B、She got her first job as a teacher at the University of Chicago.
C、She committed suicide because of her mental disorder.
D、She took over her father’s position when he died.
答案
A
解析
事实细节题。 由“She was the first woman to head a major American publishing company, the Washington Post Company.”可知Katharine 在美国是第一位管理主要的出版公司的女性。Katharine从芝加哥大学毕业,故 B 不符合题意; 从 4 题得知是 Katharine 的丈夫有精神疾病,故 C 不符合题意; 根据“After her husband’s death, Katherine operated the newspaper.”可知 Katharine 是在其丈夫去世后接管华盛顿邮报,故排除 D。
