Projecting self-confidence at an interview is vital. A recent survey found that 90 per cent of recruitment experts said that this is crucial to securing a job. It takes five seconds to make a bad impression and 30 seconds to make a good one. First impressions comprise not just what you wear, but composure, arriving on time, knowing the firm, enthusiasm for the job and, very importantly, walking through the door with confidence. A smart suit—new or dry-cleaned—is an interview must. Clean, well-groomed hair and the right amount of make-up and jewelry strike the right note. A classic handbag is better than a clutter of luggage and backpacks. It is a good idea to turn up 15 minutes early for your interview, giving yourself time for a quick visit to the ladies’ to re-apply lipstick and perfume and to check your appearance. If you still feel nervous, don’t worry. It is natural, and good interviewers will allow for it. For the interview, preparation is crucial. Body language is incredibly important at interviews. Never lean back in you chair as this suggests lack of interest. Lean forward slightly, smile confidently and look alert. There, the job is almost yours.
