A sense of humor can help ease tensions, rectify an awkward situation, and lighten an otherwise dark moment. Firstly, humor can help ease tensions. Once an angry young mother went up to a salesgirl behind a counter and said, “I sent my little boy here to buy two pounds of plums and you gave him one and a half pounds!” The salesgirl was innocent and felt hurt by the woman’s accusation. But she replied calmly: "My scale is accurate, madam, but have you weighed your little boy?" An unpleasant quarrel was thus avoided and the mother apologized. Secondly, humor can help rectify an awkward situation. Once one of my classmates made a portrait of me. It was a clumsy job. So when he asked me about my opinion, I responded: "Hmm ... It probably looks better from a distance." But a glimpse at his countenance assured me that my words might have hurt him. So I immediately added: "Ah ... You know aesthetics better than I do. I mean, distance creates beauty." Thirdly, humor can lighten an otherwise dark moment.
