A popular TV host in China has reportedly invested a big sum in a project to research, preserve and promote the Hunan provincial dialects. Chinese TV hosts are required to speak Mandarin in their work, but should dialects be allowed in TV programs? Many citizens embrace the TV programs which use dialects, while some experts hold different views. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your view on the issue.

Yes:
Dialects are an important part of local culture, but now many kids don’t even know how to speak their local dialects because of the dominant use of Mandarin around them. It would be a pity if future generations were unable to understand and speak the dialects used by their predecessors. It would be a great loss in terms of our cultural inheritance. The television programs, radio programs and some online programs provide good opportunities for the local government to introduce and promote the popularity of dialects. Allowing dialects in TV programs is an excellent way to promote language variety and protect our cultural heritage.
Besides, in the south of China, dialects are used more widely than Mandarin, and programs about local people’s daily life are more vivid when presented in dialects.
No:
TV and radio broadcasters should take the lead in popularizing Mandarin. As broadcasters, their primary goal is to let themselves be easily understood by all the audience. It can be imagined that if broadcasters speak dialects as they please, the audience who do not understand them will be confused. It is also a basic right of the audience around the country to hear Mandarin in TV or radio programs.
To require hosts to speak Mandarin is not to forbid the use of dialects, but only to restrict improper and irresponsible use of language. It is unprofessional for some hosts to imitate the pronunciation of dialects. Some dialects contain vulgar and improper words and expressions, and therefore unrestricted use of dialects will do damage to the image of the public media.

On the Use of Dialects in TV Programs Recently, discussions about dialects being allowed in TV programs have caused wide public concern. Some argue that dialects are an essential part of our culture, so language variety should be promoted and the local cultural heritage must be preserved. However, others believe that using dialects may cause confusion to the audience who cannot understand them and even lead to irresponsible use of language in public media. As far as I am concerned, we should do specific analyses on specific issues. On the one hand, we ought to promote Mandarin. If hosts speak dialects in CCTV news broadcast, the audience will get confused. Since the media’s primary function is to broadcast news, the newscaster in particular must speak Mandarin so as to maximize the coverage of the news. On the other hand, we need not handle the problem of using dialects with "a big stick policy". It’s reasonable for local TV channels to promote dialect programs to raise the local people’s cultural recognition and preserve the local cultural heritage. Take entertainment programs for example, they are not as serious as political, economic or military news reports. For this kind of programs, using dialects will surely add color to the programs, and hence enhance the effect of such programs. In that case, it’s necessary to encourage the use of dialects in some local TV programs. In conclusion, Mandarin must be used in serious programs and national newscasts, while dialects should also have their stage in entertainment and local programs.
