答案 At the mercy of the ever-accelerated advancement of Internet technology, great changes have occurred in the field of education. Modern devices and techniques are employed in teaching at all levels and the quality of teaching has been amazingly improved. Some optimistic people even claim that owing to the epoch-making development of Internet technology, students need not go to conventional schools to receive a formal education, and they only need to stay at home studying in front of their computer instead. At first thought, this proposal seems quite attractive to me for the convenience and efficiency brought by the so called tele-education; however, my second thought tells me otherwise. We cannot deny the merits of tele-education, but it would be a fatal mistake if we lost sight of its disadvantages along with them to be addressed below. In the first instance, the traditional school is a place where young people get training of their mind and character to have self-control, motivation, and habits of discipline. They study in an atmosphere of vibrant pursuit of knowledge. Through the organized activities, they learn to cooperate with other students. As students seek their educational goals, they learn to care for others and get assistance from others. However, learning at home through tele-education will only result in a number of psychological problems vexing the children. Because of the lack of adequate interaction with others, they tend to feel isolated, depressed and self-centered, and they can hardly develop a correct sense of cooperation and competition, which is of vital importance to their future life. Where will our young people learn social skills if they are stuck all day studying behind a computer? Considering that a large number of teenagers already use chat rooms instead of going out and talking to real people, we may be on the verge of creating a generation of social misfits. In the second place, without proper supervision and guidance, online study will just create a greater problem than that which already exists, with students cheating assignments, and academics pocketing vast sums to pass students who are not up to standard. How can we guarantee that the children are listening to the teachers’ lectures while we are away working? What if they are busy playing computer games or having intimate conversations with their dates in the chat room? They are encouraged to lead an insolent life due to the lax discipline. Tele-education, like anything else in the world, has more than one face. While they are essential to modern education, their bright sides shall never keep us from following its demerits. From the above reasons, I strongly hold that the versatile functions of conventional school education will never be replaced by any other forms, including tele-education. They can only serve as supplements to the mainstream conventional school education, for face-to-face contact shall never be neglected.
