答案 The Differences between Human Beings and Animals Human beings are different from animals in many ways. We should not flatter ourselves by thinking that those differences make us the only worthy creatures on the earth. But at the same time, we should not be a- shamed of the unique abilities we have been given. One of the differences is the ability of human beings to build. It is true that many animals are builders. Beavers make dam, birds make nests, and bees make hives. But no animals are able to build the kinds of structures human beings can make. No animal could build the pyramids or the Great Wall. The variety, size, and beauty of structures built by human beings are simply unsurpassed. Another difference is the ability of human beings to invent. Only human beings have devised ways to use powerful sources of energy like electricity. Only human beings have invented rockets that can travel to the moon and back. Only human beings have invented medical drugs to cure them from diseases. The most unique characteristic of human beings is the ability to speak, to use language, to reason and to write. For example, birds can sing, but only human beings can write down the meaningful lyrics and compose the melodious tune. Only human beings can paint, draw, write poems and take the pleasure in appreciating them. The ability to reason and think belongs only to human beings. Therefore, only human beings live in society and create civilizations for the descendants to keep and develop. Though there are occasions at which human beings act like animals, killing each other, only human beings can criticize and undo such brutalities. Finally, human beings are the only creatures who have religion. Human beings can feel lonely or sad and want to seek comfort from spiritual meditation. They think about a higher being or power which directs the life of the entire universe. They ponder over the meaning of life and fear of death, and long for a better life after this life ends. No animal prays to a God, or performs rituals of worship. Our special abilities give us power to affect the world for the benefit of all mankind. But one thing we should always bear in mind that human beings and animals are friends, not enemies. They should coexist on the earth peacefully. The ability to realize this is perhaps species-specific, an ability that differentiates human beings from other creatures.
