Yes:
By doing voluntary work in the community, college students can gain work experience and practice their skills, which are helpful for their future career. For example, college students can improve their problem-solving abilities and communication skills via interaction with people in the community.
As college students are easy to get lost in terms of what they want for their future life, they will get a sense of belonging to the community through voluntary work, which is beneficial for their personal development.
Doing voluntary work helps reduce the financial burden of the community, which enables the local government to improve the residential environment or support the old and the handicapped.
No:
Unpaid social work might occupy college students’ study time, which will lead to the decline of their learning efficiency in school.
It takes time and effort for the community to ensure college students’ safety and avoid potential conflicts between them since they come from different social backgrounds.
Different college students have different qualities and abilities, so the community has to do a lot of work to make clear whether a student is suitable for the job, which makes it difficult for the community to organize its work systematically and efficiently.

Should College Students Do voluntary Work in the Community? Nowadays, it is a common phenomenon that college students are willing to work in the community for free. Some people hold the view that young students should make time for unpaid social work. They believe that what students learn from social work will lay a solid foundation for their future career. What’s more, they think young people can get guidance for their future development in the community. The final point they insist is that it’s a huge financial expenditure for the local government to employ adults to do the same work. Nevertheless, those with opposite opinions believe that unpaid social work may influence students’ study because they need to take time off from study to undertake the job. They also think the irritability of young people makes it difficult for the community to avoid disputes among them. Moreover, the disparity among those volunteers increases the workload of the community workers to assign them appropriate tasks. In my view, despite those drawbacks associated with voluntary work, college students should still be encouraged to do unpaid work in the community. Since young people may easily get lost under the influence of utilitarianism, it’s better for them to think less about themselves and do more for the community.
