A day of fund-raising events around Britain has raised several million pounds for famine relief in Africa. Many people supported the campaign called "comic relief" by wearing false noses of red plastic. Television weather forecasters, shop assistants, school children and even a foreign office spokesman were seen in red noses and the sale of plastic noses is believed to have raised about two million pounds. A comedy show which went on late into the night on the BBC main television channel brought in pledges of well over five million pounds.
