W: Hey George, you’re from Boston, right?
M: Yeah, I’m from Newton. It’s a suburb of Boston.
W: I’m going to be visiting your hometown for Christmas.
M: Really? Boston is beautiful at Christmas time. Maybe you’ll get to experience a real white Christmas! Are you going there for business?
W: Actually, I was invited by an old friend of mine.
M: I see. So you’re going to hang out with your friend for the holidays?
W: Yes, but I’m a little nervous.
M: Why would you be nervous?
W: Because I’m going to be staying with his family. I’ve never experienced an American Christmas. What if I say or do the wrong thing?
M: Oh, there’s nothing to worry about. Christmas is a time of goodwill. People are supposed to forget about any differences and be nice to each other. Usually everyone is in a really good mood.
W: So give me a basic rundown. What are the Christmas traditions?
M: Each family is different, but basically you just go with the flow. If your friend’s family is religious they might go to church on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.
W: I’ve never attended a church service before. That sounds interesting.
M: The singing and music can be quite beautiful, but many American families just hang around at home on Christmas—talking, watching TV, eating food and opening presents.
W: Is there a lot of drinking during Christmas?
M: It depends on the family, but I’d say most people probably do enjoy alcoholic drinks. Have you ever tried eggnog?
W: No, what’s that?
M: It’s an alcoholic drink that sort of tastes like egg custard. It’s sweet and warm and perfect for the cold winter season.
W: Sounds delightful.(4 - 1)Are there fireworks or any kind of public events?
M:(4-2)Not really._ Usually in the town center there’s a huge Christmas tree. All the streets are lined with Christmas lights. It’s really quite pretty.
W: I’ve heard that some Americans celebrate and open presents on Christmas Eve, while others choose Christmas morning. What’s the difference?
M: Each American family makes their own Christmas traditions. My uncle eats hot dogs every Christmas. Don’t ask me why: that’s just his thing. When I was a kid, we opened our presents on Christmas Eve but our neighbor always had to wait until Christmas morning.
W: That’s kind of nice. Everybody makes their own traditions. Well, I’m certainly looking forward to this trip. I think it will be a lot of fun.(5 - 1)Someone told me the day after Christmas is a good day for sales.
M:(5 - 2)That’s true. You can go to check out the malls on the 26th.
W: Sounds like a plan. Thanks for your input, George.
M: My pleasure and Merry Christmas!
W: Merry Christmas to you, too!
