Education in school - What can schools do to help students prepare for the next stage in their lives? I think there are many things school can do to help students get ready for their next stage. Firstly, schools can provide students with professional skills and knowledge, which are key to finding a good job or furthering their studies after graduation; secondly, schools can help students to develop the ability to manage their lives and balance work and study; thirdly, schools are a micro-society where students can develop their social and interpersonal skills. - What advice would you give to someone who doesn’t like schools? I would tell him/her that schools are a place to find one’s interest and potential. One does not need to be good at every subject but should at least find his/her interest and strength among all the subjects offered by the school. Going to school gives people sufficient time to find out what he/she wants to do in the future. I would ask him/her to take this precious opportunity. - What can schools teach children that they can’t learn from their parents? I think it’s the ability to get along with others. Parents can teach children a lot of things, but most of the teaching would happen between the small group of parents and children. However, children are in a big group with their peers and many teachers in the school. So going to school would expose children to more people and teach them how to get along well with others. Education after school - In general, what opportunities are available to students after they leave school? I think there are two kinds of opportunities: finding a job or furthering their study in university. Most students would further their study in universities; some would even choose to study abroad. For those who do not go to college, they usually work in big manufacturing factories in coastal cities in Guangdong or Fujian province. - How do you think high school life differs from university life? I think university life is more flexible than high school life. Students in university are able to choose their courses while the classes in high school are fixed. There are more extracurricular activities in universities than in high school because students have to work hard to prepare for the college entrance examination. - How important do you think is it for individuals to carry on learning after they have finished school and university? I think it is very important to develop a life-long learning habit because modern society is developing much faster than before. There are new things and novel ideas coming out every day, so only sticking to what one has learnt in school or university would make one lagging behind. Keeping learning, on the other hand, would make one open-minded and always ready to face changes in the future.
