问题 A chimpanzee can be as big as

We have given you the talk about the life of gorillas. Today we’ll give you the second talk of the ape series: Chimpanzees.
The chimpanzee is a member of the ape family, which are the animals that look most like human beings. Like apes, they do not have tails as monkeys do. A chimpanzee is not nearly as big as a gorilla, which is the largest of the apes, though a big chimpanzee can be as big as a medium-sized man. Usually a chimpanzee is between 4 and 5 feet high. Chimpanzees are more intelligent than most animals, and can be taught to do things that human beings do: eat with a knife and fork; dress and undress themselves; ride bicycles, and skate; smoke pipes; and many other things. But they, also like apes, never learn to talk. At home in Africa, the chimpanzee spends much of its time in trees, but will frequently come down to the ground and walk around (usually on all fours). When a chimpanzee walks on its hind legs, its arms hang down below the knee. But their arms are shorter than that of gibbons, which is another kind of ape.
The chimpanzees live in families—one male with several females. The male will fight to keep single males from breaking up his group. Chimpanzees feed mostly on fruits and vegetables, and banana growers have to post guards to keep them off the crops when the fruit is ripe. Chimpanzees build leafy shelters in trees to sleep in at night. They have a well-developed sense of rhythm, and enjoy drumming on logs and performing a kind of stomping dance. This primitive "music" is accompanied by shrieks and howls. Female chimpanzees have one baby at a time, once a year. Chimpanzees are timid, and will run away from men. After seven or eight years in captivity, the chimpanzee becomes dangerous and bad-tempered.
In the coming two weeks we’ll talk about orangutans and gibbons.
