Water Place - Why do so many people like going to places with water, such as lakes, rivers or the ocean? I think it is almost human nature to like places with water, as you know, life begins in water and babies are born in water. I think water gives people a sense of peace and relaxing atmosphere. For example, many people like to go to the beaches or islands for a vocation to relax themselves. Besides, people can do a lot of activities with water. People can go fishing, punting, swimming in rivers, lakes or the sea. Water also cools people down in hot days, so people like to go to places with water especially in summers. - What kinds of leisure activities do people like to do in places near water? There are tons of activities people can do in places near waters. Nearly everyone can find one activity he or she likes, be it a quiet one or a more adventurous one. Swimming is the most popular and common activity. Besides, punting, diving and surfing are very popular as well. For people who like quieter activities, fishing and taking a sun bath are very good choices. For people who are into sports, running along the beach, beach volleyball or football and river trekking provide very interesting experiences. People can also take their pets with them and have a good time in places near water. - As a place to spend more leisure time, do you think the beach is more suitable for children or for old people as a place to relax? Yes and no. Beach is relaxing because people can go there and just spend the day on the beach without going anywhere else, which is very suitable for children and old people because this demands less mobility compared with other ways of spending leisure time such as sight seeing or sports. But I think beach is e-qually suitable for young people. Firstly, young people face a lot of pressure from work and life, so they can also use some of the relaxing and slow time along the beach. Secondly, there are many activities young people can do besides relaxing, for example, they can play volleyball or football, swim or surf in the sea. So I think beach is a place that is equally suitable for children, the old and the young. Government’s investment - Do you think the government should invest some money in developing facilities for water sports? Yes. Firstly, all kinds of sports, including water sports, are good ways of improving public health. So investing money in sport facilities is a good way of supporting public health. Secondly, water sports are very popular in China, especially in summer, but the lack of proper water sport facilities leads people to go to unguarded waters, which is very dangerous. With more government invested water sport faculties, people, especially children can do water sports in a safe environment Last but not least, developing water sport facilities can help nurturing people’s interest in the sport and probably nurture more Olympic medallists in the future! - Do you think that human activity is posing a threat to the oceans in the world? Yes. I think human activity somehow threatens the oceans. Firstly, people need more land to develop the cities to accommodate the increasing population there, so they started land reclamation in coastal area, which has a direct negative impact on the underwater biological balance. Secondly, the pollution from human activities is a threat to ocean life as well. Many unprocessed pollutants, for example, from ships, go to the ocean directly and bring change to ocean environment Last but not least, global warming, a proven result of human activities, change ocean structure as well, posing threat to tons of ocean life and human life as well. - What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling on the ocean? I think travelling on the ocean brings people pleasure as a special way of transportation and provides a good way of seeing different views. It certainly provides an exceptional experience since it differs much from our daily life on land. As regards its disadvantage, travelling on the ocean, I think, is very time-consuming compared with flights. I know that, for example, it takes almost a month from Qindao, China to England, while it takes only half a day by plane. Besides, huge merchant ships may also bring pollution to the ocean.
