问题     During the past 20 years, the number of mixed-raced births has increased noticeably in the United States, according to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB). Between 1968 and 1989, children born to parents of different races increased from 1% of total births to 3.4%.
U.S. Census Bureau data show that, mirroring changes in laws and attitudes from 1970 to 1991, the number of mixed-race married couples increased from 310,000 to 994,000. PRB researchers observe that this trend is taking place among all racial and ethnic groups, but the patterns for each group are distinctly different.
"Most mixed births involve one white parent, but by no means all," writes Kalish in PRB’s journal, Population Today. "For example, there were nearly 5,000 births in 1989 where one parent was black and the other parent was of another race other than white."
For black and white parents, births increased from 8,700 in 1968 to 45,000 in 1989. There has also been an increase in births to Japanese and white parents, Kalish notes. In fact, there are now 39% more births to Japanese-white parents than births to Japanese-Japanese parents.
Between 1968 and 1989, Chinese-white births more than tripled (from 1,000 to over 3,800), as did births to Chinese-Chinese parents (from 4,600 to about 17,100), Kalish notes.
"With almost 97% of births occurring to parents of the same race, mixed-race births remain a small proportion of all births," says Kalish. "Still, the upward trend towards more mixed births is a sign that the social meaning of race in the United States may be undergoing subtle shifts. It suggests that forces similar to those that softened the historical isolation of European ethnic immigrants over time may now be at work making somewhat more permeable(可渗透的)the stubborn barriers of race."
The sentence "... and the other parent was of another race other than white" (Sentence 2, Para.3) most probably means ______.

选项 A、the other parent was white rather than black
B、the other parent was black rather than white
C、the other parent was Chinese rather than white
D、the other parent was neither white nor black

答案D

解析 句中“other than”的意思是“而不是”。本句的意思是“1989年有近5000个混血儿出生,这些孩子的父母亲中,一方是黑人,而另一方是除了白人以外的其他种族”。
