问题 Topic: Development of Cars
Examiner: Now, ... (say the names of Candidate A and Candidate B)here is a list of causes for the development of cars. (Hand out the list to the candidates and let them read it through.)What do you think are the main causes of development of cars’! I’d like each of you to choose three from the list and tell each other why. If you hold different opinions you may argue and you may also add your own ideas that are not listed here. You just talk to each other and I won’t join you. You have 5 minutes.
All right. Would you begin? (The examiner may sit back and intervene only when necessary.)

答案Examiner: Thank you. Now here is a list of causes for the development of cars. What do you think are the main causes of the development of cars? I’d like each of you to choose three from the list and tell each other why. If you hold different opinions , you may argue. You may also add your own ideas that are not listed here. All right. Would you begin novo? Key points: Brainstorming: 1.Motor cars are highly desirable for obvious reasons. 2.Motor cars enable people to become more mobile. Without cars the world would still consist of isolated communities. 3.Long distances can be covered rapidly and in comfort. 4.China needs the popularization of cars to become fully modern. 5.With the popularization of cars, suburbs will become more developed and downtown areas will be less crowded. 6.If there were more cars in rural areas people would be able to get to cities more easily. The gap between town and country would become smaller. 7.Possessing a car gives one a much greater degree of mobility, enabling one to move around freely. 8.The owner of a car is not forced to rely on public transport and is therefore not compelled to work locally. 9.Travelling by car is comfortable. The heating can be adjusted in the winter and the air-conditioning in the summer. 10.The roads are often jammed with cars that ambulances and fire engines find it difficult to fulfil their duties. 11.Cars often produce air pollution and fill cities with unbearable noises. 12.Cars are the cause of traffic accidents. All over the world thousands upon thousands of people are killed or injured every year. 13.To own a private car in China not only costs a fortune, but also involves a lot of trouble; getting a license plate, keeping the engine in good repair, finding a parking place at night, etc. 14.The automobile has probably changed people’s way of life more than any other invention in the last century. More than electric lights, television, air travel, or even computers, automobiles have changed where people live and work, how they make a living, and even how they find a mate. 15.Before there were cars, people generally travelled on foot, or by horse and buggy over unpaved roads. Whether they lived in the city or the country, they rarely went further than a few miles from home. They saw the same people and places year after year. 16.The car opened up a whole new world: roads were paved and motorists were able to visit different parts of the country. Some decided to stay. People with cars could live further from their jobs, and so the age of commuting began. As a result new suburbs sprang up around the cities. The auto industry boomed, and millions of jobs were created such as manufacturing, selling, servicing and insuring cars. 17.Cars also affected social relationships, giving young people more freedom. 18.Cars are often more convenient than taking other kinds of transport, but they can be inconvenient if there are traffic jams or if parking is scarce.
