问题     According to a report, among 980 wealthy Chinese people with net assets of more than 60 million yuan ($9.5 million) in 18 cities, about 14% of them said they had either already moved overseas or had applied to do so, and another 46% said they planned to emigrate within three years. When asked why, they all cited the higher-quality overseas education for their children as the reason. What’s your opinion? What do you think push Chinese parents to choose overseas education for their kids? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

答案 The Motives of Studying Abroad Given the highly developed transportation means, students can not only choose their school and major; they can also choose in which country they want to receive their education. Under such circumstance, a common phenomenon in China is that most well-off parents would like to send their children abroad for schooling. Some people wonder why such things happen. As far as I am concerned, it is caused by both the problems of Chinese education and the exaggerated value of a foreign diploma. First of all, parents send their children abroad because Chinese education is problematic. Since Chinese educators have to select students from a huge population, the only effective, and fair way is the entrance exam. Therefore, since primary school, students’ performance and teachers’ achievement are assessed solely by the scores students get in the exam. Students are forced to cram books and memorize lots of materials mechanically without completely understanding what they really mean. This has resulted in the lack of imagination and creativity of Chinese students. Many sociological researches on Chinese students and students from other countries have confirmed such problem. To make their kids more adaptable to changing times and secure a bright future in the competitive society, parents would naturally send them abroad where kids are educated in a more practical and innovative way. Secondly, the large number of children studying abroad is also brought by the overrated evaluation of the value of a foreign diploma. Since many Chinese universities do not enjoy international reputation, it has been a common stereotype of Chinese people that graduates, with a foreign diploma, are superior to those with a domestic one. Someone graduating from a university in the United States, for example, sounds much better than someone graduating from a university in Xi’An. Foreign universities, no matter good or bad, appear somehow mysterious, more advanced and overall better than Chinese ones to Chinese people. It is hence not surprising that parents who may not really understand foreign universities would like to send their children abroad to receive education without a single doubt. In conclusion, many Chinese kids are sent abroad for education because their parents distrust Chinese rigid exam-oriented e-ducation system and worship the seemingly superior foreign education. To solve this problem, Chinese educators may have to continue revolutionizing education in China. And Chinese parents should also learn more about foreign education before they make any stereotyped decision.
