Fred was a soldier in a big camp. All the soldiers worked hard. But on Saturday afternoon, they were free, and could go into the town. But before they left, their officer would inspect (检查) them.
One Saturday, Fred came to the officer, and the officer said his hair was too long.
Fred ran to the barber’s shop (理发店), but it was closed. Fred was unhappy, but then he smiled and went back to the officer.
"Are my shoes clean now, Sir?" he asked.
The officer did not looked at Fred’s hair. He looked at his shoes and said, "Yes, they are much better now. You can go out now."
The soldiers were free on Sundays.
