答案Information and Modern life Part 1 (2 minutes) E First of all, we’d like to know something about you,so I’m going to ask some questions about yourselves. E Where do you usually get the latest news? From newspapers, the radio, TV or the Internet? A I usually get the latest news from the newspaper and the Internet. I’m a university student and I live on campus. I have my own computer. Every day I spend almost all my spare time in Internet to search for data and information to write papers, visit some websites to get the latest news and so on. For me, Internet access is free. So I can get the latest news freely. But if I want to know details about some news of special topics, I’ll buy newspapers. E What newspapers are available on campus? A There are two news stands on campus in my university. They sell all kinds of newspapers, such as Nanfang Weekly, the People’s Daily and so on. There are also various kinds of entertainment newspapers, academic newspapers like 21st Century Economy Report and so on. It’s very convenient to get many kinds of newspapers. For this reason, I like campus life. E How often do you watch TV? What programs do you like best? (Please give your reasons.) A There is no TV set in my dormitory, so I seldom watch TV since I began my campus life. But I used to watch TV very often, and my favorite program was network news offered by CCTV. Firstly, it covers news about important events both at home and abroad. Secondly, the news it provides is timely and reliable. Final-ly, it’s broadcasting in the evening during the so-called "golden time". For these reasons, the network news program reaches a wide range of viewers. E Do you have access to the Internet on campus? Which sites do you often visit and why? B Yes, I have access to the Internet on campus. I always search for data and information, receive and send e-mails, get the latest news and chat with my good friends on line. The internet is indispensable to my campus life. It makes my life rich and colorful. I often visit www. sina. com. cn and www. hotmail. com. I often check my e-mail boxes, because almost all my friends live in other cities, provinces or even abroad. I communicate with them briefly by e-mails. And I’m holding a part time job as a translator. My boss sends me the papers needing to be translated and I send him the papers that have been translated into Chinese. So, every day I check my email boxes at least three times. E How does the mass media affect our lives? B First of all, the mass media has great influence on our lives. There are so many forms of media in our lives; radio, television, newspaper and Internet. As soon as we open our eyes early in the morning, we will be influenced by some kind of media. Mass media helps us follow the latest development of many aspects in our lives. It helps us know the changes taking place in our country and the world, teaches us knowledge, makes us relaxed and so on. Certainly there are some negative affects of mass media. For example, some news is not objective, or even not true. It is broadcast just for the sake of making profits. For this reason the government should strengthen the supervision of mass media. E What would life be like without the mass media? B If there were no mass media, our lives would be gloomy and humdrum. Because of mass media, we can know the latest development in economics, politics, culture, entertainment, military affairs and so on; we can get useful information to lead a happier life; we can obtain knowledge from the educational programs on television; we can relax from tiresome study or work. Without mass media, maybe you would have no topic when you chat with your friends; we could do nothing after work and study. So the world without mass media is beyond imagination.
