答案 The world’s farmers used about 100 million tons of fertilizer in 2000, down from about 140 million tons in 1990. This was the fifth consecutive annual decline since the historical peak in 1990. Also, within the several years before 2000 a number of major food-producing countries, such as the former Soviet Union, India, and China, had reduced or barely increased their consumption of fertilizer. In China, which led the world in fertilizer use, farmers increased their reliance on fertilizer from around 28 million tons in 1995 to about 29 million tons in 2000. This gain was quite modest compared with the huge jumps in consumption that occurred during the decade following 1980. Consumption in America in 2000 was up slightly, from about 18 million tons to 19 million tons in 2000. This level of fertilizer use was still much below that during the early eighties. India, too, boosted consumption from 13 million tuna in 1995 to 14 million tons in 2000. But the recent growth in fertilizer use was kept almost to a minimum in view of the remarkable increase before 1990. Fertilizer use in the former Soviet Union continued declining in 2000, the 10th<上标> consecutive year of decline. From the peak use of around 27 million tons in 1990 to the 10 million tons of 2000, Soviet fertilizer use had fallen by more than half. To sum up, it is a reasonable conclusion that fertilizer use continued dropping on a global scale.
