W: Jackie, you look fantastic. Is it yoga that helps you recover so soon from your stroke?
M: Yes. It helps a lot. All the bending, stretching of my body and meditation.
W: Meditation? What is meditation?
M: Hmm. A good question. In my instructor’s words, meditation is a huge variety of techniques that are used to move people into the moment.
W: What kind of techniques? Can you give me an example?
M: Well.. .there are Buddhist techniques. (12) There are many different types of Buddhist techniques but some of the main techniques are about using your breath so that you are focusing on your breathing and you’re redirecting your mind, or bringing the attention of your mind to the breath.
W: Sounds peaceful. And how long have you been meditating?
M: (13) Since I was hit by the stroke. Then I began to think a lot about my health and I learned physical health and mental health are inseparable. I was too moody and the bad temper does harm to my body.
W: So meditation is very transformational.
M: Yes, very. I could sit for over five minutes at the beginning, but gradually, I could control my breath and my mind better and better. I now really enjoy the peace of mind.
W: (14-1) Are you planning to go to India, where yoga originated, to meet those masters?
M: (14-2) I have a plan to go there next year. But I do know some very good yoga instructors here in New York. They are masters and help me a lot.
W: Is it possible that you introduce some good instructors to me? I think I can use my spare time more wisely.
M: Of course I can. Maybe we can practice yoga together sometime.
