Some people don’t believe that driving slowly can save lives. But the truth of the matter is that driving slowly can help a person to avoid serious accidents. Why can driving slowly save lives? According to the illustration, when a car is being driven at the speed of 20 miles per hour, the car will go forward 22 feet before the driver can react to a danger that he sees and it will continue moving another 21 feet before he can stop it by applying the brakes. Thus the vehicle braking distance of the car at this speed is 43 feet. In other words, the car can not be stopped until it covers the distance of 43 feet. When a car is being driven at the speed of 70 miles per hour, the vehicle braking distance is 328 feet. The illustration makes it clear that the greater the distance it takes the driver to stop the car, and therefore, the more difficult it is to avoid an accident. "Nine accidents out of ten result from speeding" is a good warning that must always be kept in mind. Of course, it also does not follow that the slower a car goes, the better. For that is out of the question. The safest and, at the same time, the most practicable way is to steer a middle course.
